I graduated from UWA with a masters in Commerce (HR &IR) in 2008 but I cannot find a job. I looked for a job actively for five months , got interviews but did not get a job. I was getting broke and I decided I was going to get a job, get some money to pay bills as I look for my "dream" job. Took a factory hand position, make good money but work long hard hours and I am really miserable. Been looking for a job but still no luck. When not working, I am looking for jobs- its like I have two full time jobs. Any advice on how to get started. Time is not on my side. Am I too late to apply for a graduate program? Was thinking of starting in admin and then working my way up to a HR position but can't get a job in admin! Any advice/ encouragement will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Maria,

No you are not to late to apply for graduate programs, I would suggest you start here

http://www.gradconnection.com.au/graduate-jobs/human-resources/index.htm

A lot of grads have had to do similar things, and I admire your protectiveness to go out and get a job to support yourself while you are looking. I know these times can be tough, but if you get through it and into a good HR graduate job you know it will all be worth it!

If you are an Australian citizen then i would recommend looking at some of the government graduate programs that contain hr streams. Such as The Department of Defence and The Department of Broadband, these will, however require you to move to Canberra. Mars and NAB also have HR programs right around the country, infact both Mars and NAB are now open for applications.

I think you should stick with what you are doing until May or June, even though its tough. If you get on a grad program then great, if not there will be plenty of new opportunities within the HR industry with the economy growing again.

Best of luck and let me know what you think!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I am not an Aussie citizen but I am a permanent resident. I will check out the Mars and NAB and apply.
Cheers

Maria
Hi Maria, Both are open now! Did you apply? Any feedback on the process?

Thanks,

Mike

Sorry Mike, I haven't been on this site for a while. Yes I did apply but got no feedback from them.
Hi Maria,

I would not expect anything back for a couple more weeks yet, as both have applications currently open. Infact I caught up with Mars and NAB at the Sydney Big Meet on Friday, and both are still very much marketing their graduate programs.

So in essence, feedback and outcomes will come soon. NAB closes graduate applications at the end of this month so i suspect you will be contacted around then.

Warm regards and good luck!

Mike

Hi Mike,

Can recent graduate who are on Skilled Graduate Working Visa get a job in either HR or Marketing? I too am also looking for a job,but got no luck. Had to work for the supermarket working only 5hrs for 3 days in a week.

I hope to find my dream job and hopefully that will lead to me applying for my PR as my parents want to retire in australia. I know it is not much for them, but it is the least i can do to let them enjoy their retirement..

Regards
Alwyn
Hi Alwyn,

Its harder but it does not mean it is not possible. Your written English looks very good. When did you graduate and what country are you originally from?

Cheers,

hey mike,

I graduated in July 2009,but i did not apply for a job until i got my visa approved which was in April 2010. I did not want to apply for a job until i got my Visa label as most companies would want to be approved first before they let you work unless they are in desperate need of staff to replace a staff who has recently quit their position.

I am from Singapore and I lived in Australia for almost 8 years since i came to Australia in 2002. I love this country and the people living in here, but if i cannot get a job then my last option would be to go back to Singapore.

Alwyn
Hey Alywn,

Your story is quite similar to mine, I am a marketing graduate (July 2009). As soon i got my results, i went on travelling and enjoyed a couple of months Off. When i started my job hunt, i was really professional. Got my resume & cover letter done from a professional writer etc, well practised my interview skills, in other words you can say i was ready, determined and confident. But still waiting for the day for a offer letter with my name on it.

Initially i felt it very hard to accept some of the responses from the applied jobs. well later I thought, its Ok, Coz we were competing with those professionals who lost their jobs during recession. But Now i can see the Boom in the Job market after financial year end.

I am trying my best to get into some where, but it aint that easy. Hopefully ONE day i may land up somewhere. Never loose your confidence. Always have a spare part time job to keep your financial status in positive side. Apply as much as you can. Recently many of my uni friends are getting jobs, even after waiting for over 2 years after their degree. So always hope for the best.

Recently, in order to cover the time gap spent on Job search, i have been doing my own research, keeping up to date with the current market and making sure that, i know what's going on out there. Ultimately it's our smartness and way of approach which can impress the recruiters. So try to do some home work in part time. see if there have been any new HR,Marketing or any other tools introduced to make the work faster and easier. Learn about. I know unless you get that job, you wouldn't be able to have that good night sleep. But if you keep on doing these things, it will keep your confidence level high and able to speak to the interviewer any time.
Good luck to US

I have one problem with recent recruitment techniques

They call it as graduate JOB, and seek for experienced people in the similar industry. I believe this is total misrepresentation. I have applied for some many grad jobs, But the response is, sorry we have found some one with very similar experience in same industry. What is the use of advertising it as Grad JOb. we fresh graduate waste time in knowing the company background, rewriting our cover letter to match the skills and some extra work. But at the end what we get is, a automatically generated email, which i am so sick off,
I think it's just not fair. at least some one out there has to do something about this. Imagine if we were have to pay for applying for the job, we could have files a suite for misrepresented advertising.
