Why the Holey Dollar is a symbol of success

In 1813 Governor Macquarie created the ‘Holey Dollar’ which solved an acute currency shortage and created a flourishing economy in Australia. By punching a smaller coin out of a larger one, he instantly doubled the money supply. It’s this type of innovative thinking we encourage at Macquarie.

“The support provided by managers and colleagues is generous and forthcoming”

Why did you choose to work at Macquarie?

Working as a summer intern at Macquarie, I had experienced a taste of the culture of energy and enthusiasm. I really felt like everyone was part of the same team, striving towards the same goals. Macquarie’s reputation for excellence, both in banking and philanthropy didn’t hurt either!

How would you describe working at Macquarie?

Working at Macquarie is definitely a challenge – but a positive one, allowing everyone to grow at their own pace. The support provided by managers and colleagues is generous and forthcoming.

What advice would you give to a graduate joining Macquarie?

If you come in every morning with a smile on your face people will notice. A positive attitude combined with a desire to make a difference will take you a long way within Macquarie.

Describe the people you work with

The team I work in is really like a big family – the people care about each other because of more than just the work they produce. It’s so satisfying working in an area where you can connect with colleagues and hear about someone’s next big adventure, see their latest holiday snaps or celebrate a new baby or marriage..

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The opportunity to interact with a wide variety of people on so many different types of challenges is one of the biggest benefits of my role. Working through business requirements with Client Advisers, developing a solution design with architects then supporting applications through build, test and into production is immensely satisfying.

What’s the work/life balance like?

My team in particular loves a little bit of competition; whether it’s a marathon relay race, the JP Morgan Challenge or an evening of bowls, everyone gets really involved. All this helps to encourage an atmosphere where positive work/life balance is truly supported.

Do you get to give anything back to the community?

The constant support of the Macquarie Foundation is a great asset to Macquarie. I have had the opportunity to participate in the Graduate Volunteer Network (GVN) as well as received assistance with ideas on volunteering activities. The Macquarie Foundation also matches every dollar raised through fundraising -the support given is hugely generous.

"I have always lived a very active lifestyle, with long distance running and playing football and have found that working at Macquarie has not impacted this one bit"

What does your role entail?

As a graduate in the Infrastructure Technology Services (ITS) division I am currently rotating through 4 teams on 6 month rotations. In my current team, we look at bringing new technology solutions into the business, to fill business requirements and/or improve the existing technology at Macquarie. In other words my team gets to play with all the new technology.

What’s the work/life balance like in Market Operations and Technology (MOT)?

I find the work/life balance in MOT very manageable. I have always lived a very active lifestyle, with long distance running and playing football and have found that working at Macquarie has not impacted this one bit. Even with a full week of work, I manage to have time to play football twice a week at lunch, as well as enjoying other after-work and weekend activities, like going to the beach, catching up with friends and going to the movies.

How would you describe the environment?

I have found the work environment at Macquarie to be a very supportive work environment. The environment in MOT is very focused on client service and delivery, and while at times it can get very busy with people focused on reaching project deadlines, I have found it to be an enjoyable place to work.

Are people too busy to help?

Although members of your team or the people you are working with are busy, they are never too busy to help. I have found my team members, manager and all the people I have worked with always willing to help. You are never deterred from asking questions.

What level of responsibility are you given as a graduate?

Although you may be a graduate you aren’t treated that differently from any other member of your team. As such the level of responsibility you are given with regards to projects and other tasks is that of any other team member, but do not let this daunt you as you are also provided with all the help and support you need and ask for.

Personally I have been placed in charge of a number of projects; one such project was while I was working as a support member for the Banking and Financial Services division (BFS). I was tasked with designing a training programme for the business to educate users on the best practices for some of our collaboration tools.

What do you consider to be your most notable achievement so far?

I was given the responsibility of managing the Sharepoint migration project from an external party into Macquarie’s infrastructure. The process included collaborating with staff in the Americas region, creating a test plan for the migration, migrating Sharepoint and overseeing and supporting the end user testing. Successfully completing this project on time, I would say, is my most notable achievement so far.
