The Department of Defence is one of Australia's largest organisations, encompassing serving members of the military and public servants (civilians). We implement the policies of government, and work to defend Australian interests and values. Our workforce consists of driven and skilled people, committed to ensuring Australia's security now and into the future.
Defence is a values-based organisation: Professionalism, Loyalty, Integrity, Courage, Innovation and Teamwork are fundamental to the work we do. The mission, to defend Australia and its national interests, is enabled by military members and public servants working together in an integrated environment. People generate results and we create a workplace where people are valued for their achievements. This, in turn, creates an environment that supports Defence capability and the mission of the Department.

The Defence Graduate Program runs for ten months. From orientation in February through to completion in December, this period is carefully managed by a dedicated and professional team whose goal is to facilitate your introduction to the diverse nature of Defence. You will undertake three varied work rotations in which you will build the skills, knowledge and networks vital for a successful career within the Department. Most rotations are in Canberra, although there may be rotations available in other locations for those graduates who seek a further challenge.
Graduates undertake a specifically designed suite of training during the year, including courses to enhance your policy, writing, strategic and personal skills. These will give you a strong base on which to build your career within Defence and the wider public service. Within the Finance Stream, graduates also receive additional training in specific areas to enable effective transfer of your technical skills into the public service.
We also take all of our graduates on a week-long tour of Defence establishments outside Canberra to increase your understanding of Defence operations across Australia.
The salary for the duration of the Graduate Program is $49,288 (plus generous superannuation), coupled with excellent working conditions. On successful completion of the program, graduates are advanced to an APS Level 4 position in a finance-related area, with a salary set at $57,929 (plus superannuation).
The Department of Defence is committed to providing working conditions designed to balance your professional development and personal needs.

My year in the Defence Graduate Program has been an absolute adventure!
I spent my first four months working in Application Design and Development, looking not only at what information capabilities we can utilise now, but what is on and beyond the horizon.
My second rotation was in Navy Headquarters. Have you ever considered how complex it would be to get up-to-date information systems and support on a ship in the middle of the ocean? I saw the Change of-Command ceremony for the Chief of Navy, and reported to the Deputy Chief of Navy.
If all of this wasn't enough, I spent my last three months living and working on an operational RAAF base - about 500 metres from the most powerful jet fighters in Australia. Being on a RAAF base introduced me to the military lifestyle, and what it's like to be out in the regions of Australia - where things get really difficult at times!
The graduate year hasn't been all about the work either - I've dined with the Governor-General, gone camping with the ex-Deputy Chief Air Force, flown a
Hornet Simulator, and made some of the best friends!
