If you are successful in obtaining a position on the GDP, you will start working with us in Canberra in mid January.
Development opportunities
Throughout your graduate year you will undertake a structured and comprehensive training and development program. The department's GDP aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge that will place you in a highly competitive position within the department and the Australian Public Service.
As part of the department's GDP you will be provided with:
A formal induction program that will introduce you to working within the department and the Australian Public Service
A Foundations of Leadership residential
A professional program of training and development
Three diverse and challenging workplace rotations that, where possible, include policy, program and corporate placements and aim to give you a diverse overview of the department
The opportunity to contribute to policy development, program management and corporate management
An industry tour where you will meet with industry representatives
Support from GDP managers, a personal coach, trained supervisors and previous graduates
The opportunity to give and receive feedback on your progress through individual meetings, regular focus groups and monthly group meetings
Upon successful completion of the program you will be awarded with a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Canberra which provides as strong foundation for completing further postgraduate study
Training and Development
Throughout the eleven month program you will have training and development in areas including:
Budget and financial management
Foundation of government
Leadership training
Administrative law
Communication (conflict resolution and negotiation, assertiveness, feedback)
Policy development
Project development and management

Applications for the 2010 Graduate Development Program have closed.
