Entry Requirements

You need to have completed one year of an undergraduate degree or equivalent (fulltime). If you are not studying ICT, you will need to enrol in an ICT major. This will allow you to apply your studies to your job; and what you learn on the job to your studies.

If successful, you will be selected by one of the participating Australian Government agencies across the country. You will work as part of a team in an ICT area of your employing agency undertaking a broad range of ICT related tasks.

The Workload and Program Structure

You will work a minimum of 2 days a week in the workplace with the remainder of the week dedicated to your study.

You will complete your Cadetship when you successfully graduate from your current course of study. You must participate in the Program for a minimum of 18 months, but no longer than 3 years.

I was interested in the Cadet Program because I thought I needed some hands on work to motivate me with my study a bit more. I have found myself in an excellent working environment, with plenty of opportunity for hands on ICT work.

It has also been a great networking opportunity with graduates, cadets and apprentices as well as other Defence staff. Defence offers fantastic support for personal development, study, numerous training programs and valuable work experience. The Defence community has been very welcoming, I feel quite comfortable despite being one of the few girls in ICT . I'm interested by the exciting and responsible nature of Defence culture and the underlying ICT structures that make it work.

I would strongly encourage anyone esp girls to take advantage of everything the Cadet program has to offer.

The Australian Public Service (APS) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cadetship Program is a great program in which to be involved. What caught my eye was the ability to study and work at the same time with relation to my University degree.

Not only does the program provide you with a step in the door to an amazing career in a large organisation, but you also gain valuable experience and networking opportunities that your fellow graduates will not have at the end of their studies.

In my placement at Centrelink I have worked from February 2009 in the Usability Centre in Adelaide . With some fourteen staff, the Usability Centre uses human centred design methodologies to replicate real life situations when analysing the usability and accessibility of products, services and applications.

Working at Centrelink so far has been an enjoyable experience; learning many new concepts while applying knowledge learnt at university to real life work situations.
