Tarai wrote:Hi Dan,

Thanks for letting me know I have enough time. Next year March - June is my last semester and hopefully I'll pass. I just need to be reassured that the chances of getting a job up there is okay.

No, I don't have a PR or Australian citizenship. But can you guide me on what I need to do, so I can work there? Right now, I'm just doing bits of research here and there, on 'graduate programs' , and 'australian visas. I don't know what kind of visa I need to apply for. I did some research on the australian immigration website, and found one called an "Occupational Trainee Visa". I like that one because it gives me a chance to get work experience first. A totally different one I guess is a "Work Visa", where I'll actually be working for given duration. But all these visas depends on whether a company is interested in sponsoring me right?

What if a family member just sponsors me? And if I work there according to a given visa, will that help me to apply and achieve a PR?

Thanks Dan.

Regards,
Tarai.

Hi Tarai,

I can't really give you too much advice on the Residency side of things as I'm not an expert at that, a lot of the time I know that employers have a hard requirement around residency status for applicants and usually you will need PR to get past initial screening. I would suggest asking some of the actual recruiters what they are looking for in terms of residency details.

Another avenue might be to speak to an immigration consultant/agent although this may not be a cheap option.

Hope this helps a bit and let us know if there is anything else.

Tarai wrote:Hi Dan,

I currently live in Fiji. I plan to do my final 2 units next year March, to finish my Bachelor in IT program from Central Queensland University. I started in 2003, and next year would be my last year (long time I know). But even then, I'm still determined and hoping to find work over there when I finish. And I was wondering what's the chances of companies over there hiring someone who spent that much time in university like me? Hehe.

I like a little bit of Java Programming, Professional and Technical Communications, and Networks. And secondly, since I'm planning to finish my final units here, and graduate here, what do I need to do to get the attention of companies up there? Should I browse through these company websites (A-Z) you've listed and how do I get there attention?

Thanks Dan.

Hey Tarai,

I wouldn't worry too much about the time spent at uni, I'm sure you can outline why it has taken you so long especially if you have been studying overseas.

I guess the biggest issue will be your work rights in Australia, do you have PR or are you a citizen?

In terms of I.T. positions, you should keep an eye on this part of our site here

There are a few employers taking applications now such as Accenture & IBM to name a few, however if you are looking next year in feb/mar/apr then there will be a wider range of employers recruiting so you have a bit of time up your sleeve.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Dan

Hey Guys,

The Pricewaterhouse Coopers Graduate Program team have let us know that their summer vacation programs have opened for applications in the last week few weeks.

You can find out more about these programs and how to apply at this link here

PwC has a rolling recruitment process so don't' have a firm closing date so they encourage you to apply early to avoid missing out so get in now if you're interested.

Hello people,

Some of our Melbourne based contacts are looking for a part time Finance Administrator to work 2 days a week in Melbourne, flexible hours may make this suitable for an Accounting student.

Check out some details here:

No worries, if you've signed up on the main site to get alerts about openings, you'll get an email in the near future about these programs opening up.

Hey mate, the summer internship and vacation programs are going to be accepting applications over the next few months so I'd definitely recommend applying and trying to get a place on one of these programs.
tomhoward wrote:Something tells me the types of people who think government should employ more people simply for the sake of keeping people in employment weren't going to vote Liberal in the first place

If Australia is to be a competitive, innovative economy - and fertile ground for tech startups - employment and investment needs to come from the private sector, not government.

In a healthy economy, any job-seeker who is able to create value should be able to find employment in the private sector. If there's a surplus of qualified, talented people, companies will find a use for them.

Go and ask companies who hire IT professionals and find out what their biggest problem is. I don't think many of them would say it's that there are *too many* great applicants for their positions.

To blame government job cuts for unemployment in the sector is to look in the wrong place for the problem.

Hey Tom,

we're not really making this a total Labor Vs Liberal thing just a policy issue that we think doesn't make sense from an organisational perspective for a lot of the government departments out there and raising awareness of this issue amongst the voting graduates out there.

I definitely agree with you that to grow the tech startup scene in Australia we need more investment from the private sector, government initiatives that get startups off the ground have too much red tape for most startups to deal with to be any real help.

We're talking about graduates across the board not just IT here and cutting the supply of graduates moving into the public service for a two year period is not going to be a good move over the long term.

Good to hear!
Hey benny,

There are a number of initiatives underway at the moment to make the government more efficient and cut down on bureaucracy specifcally the recently released Moran Review as well as the creation for AGIMO to streamline and reduce ICT costs in government.

Graduate recruitment does actually play a big part in some of these initiatives, as bringing graduates into the government reduces the need for the government to hire external organisations to provide services.

Graduate recruitment is often a strategic workforce planning initiative used by governments and private companies across the world, so abruptly stopping grad recruitment for federal government for a two year period is not a clean solution to reducing cost of government.

Our posts to bring attention to this issue are not to sway support towards Labor or the Liberals but to get graduates asking questions and voicing opinions much like you have in order to get political parties to think about their policies based one what the citizens of Australia want
Hey Zaydi,

Not sure where you want to work, but I know we have a couple of Accounting Graduate Employers looking to hire accounting graduates for their 2011 programs that you may want to apply for now to see how you go.

First up FaHCSIA: http://www.gradconnection.com.au/fahcsia/graduate-jobs/accounting.dot

and secondly ACCC: http://www.gradconnection.com.au/accc/graduate-jobs/accounting.dot

They are both federal government graduate employers, FaHCSIA has positions based in Canberra, and I think ACCC has positions in a variety of locations. They won't be too focussed on the fact that you've had a few years between graduation and looking to start your accounting career.
Hey Yorka,

I don't know much specifically about SA government departments recruitment timeframes, I'd say hit up the websites of the departments direct, a number of them do have formal grad programs and accounting grads are always people they are looking to recruit.

There is also the SA government grad register, it might pay to put yourself in there if you haven't already.

There are also a number of smaller accounting firms we've spoken to based in Adelaide that have been interested in taking on graduates as well.

hope that helps at least a little, although to be honest, the Gold Coast does sound tempting...

dan
It doesn't actually sound like you've got a problem yet, you don't have an offer from company B yet do you?

It's a tough situation, you need to be careful when speaking to company B as they will not want to hear they are your 2nd choice and you are waiting to hear back from another offer.

I would suggest that if you receive an offer from company B before company A, just say thanks for the offer, I need some time to weigh up my options and then just ask company A what time frame they are working on either making an offer or letting you know you weren't successful.

if this is enough time for company B to wait, you can then let them know once you have heard one way or the other from company A about whether you will accept their offer or not.

I think this is the best way to handle the situation rather than accepting an offer from company B then renegging on it if company A offers you, it'll help build you up some karma points.

hope that makes sense?
Hey PD,

Maybe have a look at the Lend Lease Accounting program:

http://www.gradconnection.com.au/lend-lease/graduate-jobs/accounting.dot

they are open for another week or 2 for applications and have a pretty decent accounting intake and are a pretty cool firm.
Is that with the ANAO, the federal government department in Canberra?
Thanks for posting that opportunity up about the internship you have.

Maybe try and take it easy on the caps lock key next time when you enter in the subject
no worries jerry, let us know what the outcome is
Hey Jerry,

If you check out the Defence Grad Program website FAQ's I think they may accept your application even if you finished your degree a few years back now, check it out here:

http://www.defence.gov.au/graduates/faqs.htm#Q9

not 100% sure but if you flick an email through to this address: graduate.program@defence.gov.au they might be able to give you a clear answer

Cheers
