Hi, i will finish my studies this year and have not got a grad placement yet. I want to move to the city as i live in the country at the moment, but am unsure when to move. I am studying accounting and business law and was wondering if you guys know when most small-medium firms advertise placements so i can organise my relocation.
Any advice would help
Thanks
Candice

Hi Candice,
Difficult situation, but essentially what I would advise you to do is start doing your research into small and medium sized accounting firms now, to see if any have any vacancies available. If they do arrange a week where you can go for an interview with a few of them in the city of your choice. That way, upon being successful, you will be able to relocate to start your first graduate job rather than move first.
That being said, if you do move you will be a lot more flexible to attend graduate interviews.
As for formal accounting graduate programs, all of them (that I know of) are closed. So you need to look for adhoc graduate roles. Remember that firms are not your only option. There are lots of junior accounting roles available at the banks, in government departments and other corporates.
Are you thinking of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide or Perth?
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your response. I am moving to Adelaide. I dont think many graduate roles are listed there at the moment, maybe there will be more after exams. I will most probably move in late January unless something comes up sooner. I was just worried that by doing so i may miss the peak times for employment, if there is such a thing. I will do as you advised and try to synchronize interviews in the mean time. I currently work for the government but only as a temp and have applied for most government grad openings in march last year and some organisations then also.
Any way
Thanks again
Candice

If you are into government graduate opportunities, then check this link out. It sounds awesome but I don't know too much about them!

If Adelaide is anything like Brisbane, accounting firms (especially middle-teir) struggle to get the right graduates for them as the right graduates are usually taken by larger firms. If you give those guys a call I would suspect a good chance of getting an interview, but that being said I have never tried it so dont know for sure!
Good luck!

Improving public education is a patriotic act. There’s no better way to perpetuate a strong, safe, prosperous America than by providing her children with the education needed to keep her that way.

Yeah I know what you mean, the same cliche answer applied to a number of my friends who have moved to Australia from countries even like New Zealand! The problem is sometimes this answer is genuine and other times it is just a soft excuse for them really saying that they are not interested in you for the role.
There is not much way around it other than to keep searching. If you feel that these answers are genuine though then potentially you should look for a bridging type course from CA or CPA.
Good luck!
