Does anyone know of any HR grad programs or jr roles that aren't with recruitment companies?? I'm having trouble getting a start in a human resource department, I don't really care what company although I'd prefer something like a bank like CBA or Westpac, or a large corporate company like Qantas or IBM. I just think it would be cool to work for a large companies HR department, if only someone would give me a chance.

Hi sydneychic,
Sorry for the late reply, we have been flat out down in Melbourne attending the annual AAGE confrence. One of the big things we noticed there is that there are a number of companies that struggle to recruit HR graduates because they are not thought of as typical corporate employers.
Some of the big ones we noticed were
- coles
- Futurestep
- NAB
- australia post
- Dept of Broadband
- harvey norman
Graduates seem to think that all they hire is supermarket workers, retail shop assistants and posties. Ofcourse there is a large corporate backing behind them. I would look into these guys aswell. There are more opportunities available in HR that grads tend to realise. As we visit more and more companies I will make a note of who is actively looking for HR grads and post them in this forum.
Warm regards,
Mike

HI threre,
I am keen to apply for a HR Graduate position. I want to move to the city. I have almost completed a teaching degree at uni with a minor in Business STudies. I have completed a diploma in Human Resources Management at TAFE. I have also have a diploma in Real Estate.
Is it possible to make the switch from TEaching to HRM?
Is it worthwhile applying for this type of position?
I am a little unsure.
cheers

Hi Kylie,
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you! I have been flat out with the new release of our website
I heard back from my friend and HR and here is what she had to say
If any grad roles have been affected by the global financual crisis, it's Human Resources. CBA and Westpac had HR grads last year, but way less than the graduates they hired in finance, accounting and business. Also, the St George graduate program is only "generalist banking", but graduates do rotate through the human resources team for a three month stint in HR.
I would say if she can find a Human Resources stream then... she should definately apply but suggest her her hr qualification is highlighted on her cv and she writes an awesome cover letter about why she wants human resources
Hope that helps!

Hi Kylie,
I know some people who work in HR and it is possible to enter HRM without having studied HR or coming from a different background. Not sure if you've thought about this but applying for entry level HR roles instead of HR graduate programs is also a way to enter the industry.

Hi Qwerty,
Thats a very good point, I can't believe I forgot to mention it! I actually know a couple of people with diplomas and certificates in HR who have got themselves into junior Human Resources roles, one of which is now studying part time for a degree in HR while continuing to work for her employer.
Some of the best places to find junior HR roles are in areas of high staff volume such as call centres, distribution centres and in the banking industry. When I worked at a call centre I remember there beign a large HR team, and a number of junior hr professionals rotated through the team.
Kylie, good luck, and let us know how you go!
